Sometimes You Just Need Elevation
Looking Down, Thinking Bigger.
After another quick mountain bike after work, I found myself up on University Mountain, standing on one of my favorite trails and looking back toward the valley below. It was one of those evenings that just pulls you out of your own head, and somewhere along the way, a poem occurred to me.
“I sat down to take in the view ... Missoula is a shithole, and that is true... but from afar, it’s a beautiful view. “
A little contradictory, maybe even a little absurd, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that both things were completely accurate at the same time.
I had to laugh at myself a little, honestly. Still, I’m glad I can escape up here when I need to, because there’s something about getting above it all that helps me see the bigger picture, literally and otherwise.
June 28th Never Sits Still
June 28th has a long history of pushing toward the door, from a frantic Alaska departure in 2003 to lightning-soaked 24-hour races and honest self-examination in 2024. Looking back across the years, this date keeps asking the same question in different weather. The answer, almost every time, has been yes.
