Warrior in the Woods
December 29, 2024 - Rainy Revelations
I wasn't thrilled about it at all... the gray drizzle, the damp chill creeping under my collar. We had decided to visit the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park, a decision made primarily by Snuggles (you know her as Mo), whose suggestions I typically trust… but today, I was the reluctant child dragged along. The first thing greeting us was a spirited wooden warrior, frozen mid-celebration, as though taunting my inner reluctance with unabashed joy.
Yet, as we wandered deeper into the park, my hesitation transformed into genuine discomfort. It wasn't just the rain, though the steady tapping on my jacket definitely grated against my sensory defenses. Water has always been tricky for me... those sudden cold drops triggering an almost reflexive annoyance. So there I stood, staring out at a half-sunken sculpture of a boat, feeling very much adrift myself. Everything felt uncertain, reflected in the rippling water around that rusting hull.
But then, as if on cue, something shifted. Maybe it was Mo's quiet enthusiasm, or perhaps it was the strange beauty of art merging effortlessly with nature, thriving despite the downpour. Suddenly, the rain didn't seem quite so intrusive. It wasn't long before I found myself taking images with my camera, completely engaged, the sullen mood washed away as thoroughly as the water trickling down our hoods. Standing in front of a rain-speckled mirror, snapping a damp selfie, I realized it had become a genuinely joyful day.
Sometimes, the things we resist most are precisely the moments we need... small adventures that remind us life isn't about avoiding discomfort, but finding joy despite it.
